Since our inception in 1986, MMTC has served as the leading voice for communities of color and other marginalized groups in the nation’s most important industries. We have worked tirelessly, collaborating with hundreds of other advocacy groups and advising government and industry to bring about and influence equity and inclusion in Tech, Media, and Telecom.
MMTC’s work focuses on five core issue areas:,
Technology, Privacy, and Civil Rights in the Digital Age
As the nation continues to become increasingly reliant on technology to access jobs, education, healthcare, civic engagement, and more, it is more important than ever to ensure marginalized groups, such as low-income and communities of color, are not left behind. MMTC is the leading voice advocating for inclusion, consumer protection, and civil rights in the evolving tech landscape.
Infrastructure, Connectivity, and Digital Inclusion
Connectivity is more important now than ever, particularly in the era of COVID-19 – and yet there are vast swaths of the country that cannot afford broadband or lack access to broadband connections at all. MMTC takes the lead on numerous joint filings advocating for efforts to promote and accelerate broadband buildout and adoption, focusing on both urban and rural areas.
Media Ownership and Multicultural Content Diversity
Since our founding in 1986, MMTC has worked to increase minority representation and diverse ownership in media, broadcasting, and content creation. It is important that our nation’s airwaves and creative content reflect the voices, stories, and needs of every community, and particularly historically marginalized groups.

Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment
MMTC leads, convenes, and collaborates with other national civil rights and public interest organizations, federal government agencies, and industry to provide opportunities for and promote diverse media, telecom, and tech ownership, and diversity in the supply chain. Our influence has heavily impacted policy that creates opportunities for small, minority, and women-owned businesses, fostering economic empowerment for historically disenfranchised communities.

Upskilling Tomorrow’s Workforce
Since 2015, MMTC has worked on programs and initiatives that upskill our workforce for the nation’s shifting employment landscape, particularly in new and evolving Tech, Media, and Telecom sectors. We have expanded our reach and efforts beyond our original Department of Labor Contract with the National Urban League to promote, expand, and diversify Registered Apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs, and we are working with several new organizations to develop proposals and secure funding for new programs.
