On March 25, 2009, President Barack Obama nominated Jonathan S. Adelstein to be Administrator of USDA Rural Development’s Rural Utilities Service. As Administrator, Adelstein is responsible for all of the Service’s programs including the Telecommunications, Electrical, Water and Environmental, distance learning and Telemedicine programs. Adelstein was previously a Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission, where he led efforts to improve rural telecommunications and broadband. Before joining the FCC, Adelstein served for 15 years as a staff member in the United States Senate.
